Characteristics of Home Child Care Practitioners Associated with Quality in
Home-Based Child Care



Intentionality - the home child care practitioner is genuinely interested in working with children and families.
Family is supportive to home child care practitioner offering home-based child care.
Home child care practitioner is satisfied with her work.
Home child care practitioner is committed to working with parents to provide quality child care.
Home child care practitioner seeks the support of other practitioners and community agencies.
Home child care practitioner sees herself as a business owner - takes a professional approach to operating her business.
Home child care practitioner offers a balanced curriculum for children her care.
Home child care practitioner is willing to attend training opportunities to expand her knowledge and skills in working with children and families.
Home child care practitioner is an advocate for her chosen profession and/or makes a contribution to the community (i.e.: is a mentor for other home child care practitioners, volunteers for a good cause, etc.)
Home child care practitioner recognizes the importance of balancing her work, family and personal life - she recognizes the value in taking time for herself!



Definition of Home Child Care Practitioner



In the province of Ontario, Home Child Care Practitioners provide child care for up to 5 children under 10 years of age in addition to his/her own children at any given time in his/her own home. Home Child Care Practitioners are those who have chosen home child care as a career and strive to provide quality care in their homes. Practitioners are encouraged to recognize the importance of:
the early years of a child's life and providing a program which enhances the health, development and well-being of children in his/her care.
the support of their own family while they provide child care in their home.
participating in professional development and training on a regular basis to continually expand his/her knowledge and skills and keep up to date on emerging trends in the early childhood education field.
obtaining support and assistance from other caregivers, Caregiver Support Networking Groups and various community agencies to reduce the feeling of isolation.
involving parents in their home child care business.
being involved in community planning processes and other volunteer-related
activities pertaining to child care.
balancing her work, family and personal life.
